‘Hart van de Waalsprong’ is the new city center of Nijmegen North, where living, shopping, and public facilities converge. The idea was to give this center the character of a small town, with the lively atmosphere that comes with it. The design of the buildings and public spaces is both climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive. Robust building blocks, a thoughtful selection of materials and intricate detailing contribute to a distinctive city district with a strong cohesion. Monadnock designed three ‘specials’ as part of this development. Two entrance buildings, marking the northern and southern access roads, and a tower building on the central square. Crevas is the northern entrance building. Its prominent white façade along the main road, the Graaf Allardsingel, is reminiscent of a large billboard. It’s constructed with red bricks arranged in an abstract heart-shaped pattern, a nod to the name of the area. On the corner of Theo Dobbestraat, a prominent bay window protrudes above the sidewalk, emphasizing the significance of this point in the plan. The bay window overlooks the eastern flank and acts as a mediator between the large billboard and the smaller scaled façade along Theo Dobbestraat. At the rear, spacious west-facing galleries offer residents of the 30 compact apartments both privacy and abundant sunlight. Commercial spaces are situated on the ground floor.
