The 25 metre-tall structure ‘Make No Little Plans’ is the standard bearer for the 25th Festival a/d Werf in Utrecht. It forms the central pivot of the theatre festival and towers high above the heart of the festival in the Neude Square with a provocative message, appealing to visitors, inhabitants and administrators. The text is a fragment of a statement attributed to Daniel Burnham (1846-1912). This architect and town planner was part of the Chicago School. The full text reads as follows: ‘Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. Think big.’
