In the heart of the city of Groningen, ‘Oosterling’ functions as a new cornerstone of the ‘Grote Markt’, the central market square. This ambitious project, which completes the eastern wall of the square, sits right at the junction of Grote Markt, Nieuwe Markt, Oosterstraat and Poelestraat. It adds new vitality to this remarkable spot in the city centre with a mixed program of housing, shopping and relaxing. The popular and dynamic Foodcourt on the first and second floor level has large façade openings exposing a covered market square with an informal atmosphere. A culinary hotspot that forms the perfect extension of its vibrant surroundings. Apartments of different sizes are situated on the upper floors, with the top levels offering duplexes with roof-terraces. The building is made of brick, in a subtle grey-greenish colour and has a stone-clad plinth. It contains a refined level of detailing including classic masonry accents and slender metal railings. The façade on the market square, monumental and dignified, connects to the Vindicat building and the planned hotel, which will form the central part of the eastern wall. On all other sides, the facades on the street step down two floors to ensure a respectful approach towards the building’s historical setting. Above, a recessed rooftop made of light brick, with an irregular roof line and playful arches, has a less formal character.
