The Permanent Model represents a structuring principle. Small variations in the openings between spaces produce large differences in the definition thereof. The model, cast in concrete, is 225 centimetres tall and comprises nine layers measuring 70 x 70 x 25 centimetres. Each layer has sixteen columns. On the bottom layer, these columns are cruciform, 10 x 10 centimetres and define nine rooms. On the top layer, the columns are square with a cross-section of just 2 x 2 centimetres. This makes the demarcation of the nine rooms so minimal that the entire layer functions as a single space. The intervening layers have a gradual transition from openness on top, to seclusion below.
