On the edge of the beloved Spaarndammer neighbourhood in Amsterdam, the ‘Samen Bredius’ project is being developed. The new residential complex seeks a connection with the world-renowned Amsterdam School architecture, which requires a great deal of tact and careful design coordination. The distinctive, expressive brick architecture of this historic residential area has been continued in a contemporary manner in the exterior of the new residential building. The interior follows an entirely different logic, as the hybrid structure is largely executed in timber, allowing for a strong performance in the sustainability requirements for new buildings. The triangular building block makes three expressive heads, visible from afar and together creating a characteristic appearance. In between are long, rhythmic street facades that are more reserved in nature, and contain inviting gateways that connect the collective courtyard with the existing system of courtyards in the neighbourhood. This courtyard forms a green oasis and is publicly accessible. In addition to a neighborhood café, commercial spaces will be provided on the ground floor, and the roof will include a communal terrace for the residents. Samen Bredius thus adds a contemporary building block to the historical ensemble that makes up this beloved urban neighbourhood.
