Three proposals for a new building on the south-east corner of the ‘Grote Markt’, or central market square, in Groningen were presented to the public and a professional jury. These proposals are the result of an invited competition initiated by the City Council of Groningen. Monadnock was commissioned by Vastgoud Development to design one of them. Named ‘Oosterling’, it acts as a cornerstone in the eastern-wall of the market square. A monumental front faces the open space while the main part of the volume is carefully embedded in the dense urban fabric. The public decides on a quarter of the total points-score that determines the winner of this competition.
